Hangman has been a favorite game played by all ages and many countries for many years. Although historians are not sure where Hangman originated there are records of the game being played that date back to 1894 in “The Oxford Guide to Word Games”, by Tony Augarde.

Hangman is a game of both strategy and possibly luck. Yet you can increase your odds at winning if you have knowledge of what letters to choose or avoid. Here are some easy strategies to win at Hangman every time you play.

Guessing the Opponents Word

Once you have guessed one or two vowels you need to start with the consonants. The most common used consonants used in the majority of words are r, t, s, l, d, and n.

A common error for an opponent is to use uncommon consonants. If you have not revealed your opponents word after choosing a few common consonants then try selecting the uncommon consonants such z, q, j, and v.

If you have not guessed the word by now then start analyzing you opponents personality. You rival will usually pick a word that fits their personality. Ask yourself a few questions about your opponent that includes their hobbies, work, or lifestyle. Usually your opponent will pick a word that is familiar to them.

How to Choose a Good Word and Stump Your Opponent

Try not to pick words that have double consonants or vowels, if your opponent chooses one of these letters then they probably have guessed your word already. Words like ripple, choose, dribble, coffee, puppy, or Mississippi should always be avoided.

Avoid familiar words like babysitter, Oregon, computer, dishwasher, movie, flower, doctor, or telephone. Once an opponent guesses one letter then they are their way to winning the game.

Shy away from words that require another consonant or vowel to complete it. An example would be words like quantum, chocolate, pucker, graphite, ghastly, mashed, withstand, twilight, or lightening.

Stay clear of words that use the same consonant or vowel consistently such as suspense, tantrum, entertainment, or internet.

Select unusual words that are not used everyday. Glamour, profligate, malign, embryo, limpid, umbilicus, or foible.Do not choose the obvious letters like r, t, s, l, d, and n. And definitely do not choose a words that contain the letters z, q, j, or v.The first thing you always want to do in guessing the opponents word is to start with the vowels. The most common vowels used are e, a, o, and i.
